Fast-paced social media vs. more intentional newsletters
I've done the former, now I'm looking for the latter
With the chaos in the art space lately, I want to make a more meaningful connection with the people following my art in 2023.
The way I see it, newsletters are a way for me to ensure my connection with followers all over the world, without having to spend my time constantly maintaining 10+ platforms by posting multiple times a week. I’d like to spend that time drawing and having conversations with you instead. With a newsletter, you and me decide whether I can reach you, not a platform that could decide to change their algorithm or disappear tomorrow.
Twitter has become unpredictable and might be effectively gone tomorrow, other social platforms are influencing accounts’ reach and becoming oversaturated with constant posting, and AI images are on the rise, along with corporations cracking down on the creative industry to get their piece of the pie.
Us content creators are all contributing to the fast-pacedness of social media. We feel forced to post multiple times a week to make sure we show up on our follower’s timelines. If we don’t have the content, we show our old work. Which is great, because with the fast-pacedness of social media people barely stop scrolling to appreciate an image anymore (I’m guilty of this too). But if we weren’t so anxious to scroll to the next post, we’d maybe be able to allow ourselves to sit and appreciate a piece of art for a while.
And because I want to spend more time drawing and talking instead of posting, I won’t be sending a constant barrage of newsletters, unless it’s something time sensitive like a giveaway, sale or other offer. If I’m able to make my newsletter my main platform, my aim is to send out a new one with an overview of news and new art once or twice a month, not post 3 times a week like I need to do now.
So in conclusion: I think focusing more on newsletters for news and updates and social media for *just talking and connecting* is better for you AND me! So I hope to see you on my list!
