I’m going to be taking a soft social media break for the coming two weeks (at least). This seems like a good time to post a series of newsletters I wrote two years ago. It’ll be a 4-part series, ending on Christmas Eve. Hopefully just in time for you to put some tips from the series into practice :)
What did it bring me?
You’re probably thinking: all that hassle! What were the pros?
For one, a lot more peace of mind. I felt less rushed and felt less like I was missing out on lots of information. I still don’t know what I missed, which probably means it wasn’t that important. For things I don’t want to miss out on, like art shares and work opportunities, I use keyword searches during my social media hour (and often enough they show up in my feed, because that’s how algorithms should work, right?) to find them anyway.
Instead of spending my evenings on my phone, I read books, got my chores done early, watched movies, spent time outside and thought about new things I’d like to try. I feel more on top of things overall. I even got the urge to sketch just for fun while sitting on the couch for the first time in years.
I wonder what I’d do if I removed social media from most of my day for a longer time – which is why I’m thinking of doing the complete absence for a while. I think it might help me reprioritize my relationship with social media and clear up whether it really is important to me, or less than I think.
Tomorrow, part 3: what if you need social media?
